Subject: Please forward to parents

Good morning! This information is only for those who received a FREE First in Math account at the beginning of the year.

This is to let you know that so many of our students who wanted a First in Math account at the beginning of the year have either never started playing OR have stopped playing completely!  Please understand that even though you as a parent aren’t paying for this account, we have offered it in hopes to challenge our students to develop better math sense.

Mrs. Harbuck consistently gets requests for accounts from students, so to enable her to give accounts to those who REALLY want to play, we will be monitoring ALL accounts that have been GIVEN to students for the next week.  If at least 100 points are not obtained within the next week, we will assume that your student is no longer willing or able to give time to First in Math, and we will eliminate their account.  This will enable us to provide other students who are requesting accounts with usernames and passwords.

Thanks so much for your understanding!

Will you please forward this attachment to your parents along with this information?  Thank you!!!

The fifth grade career portfolio paper is attached.  Each student received one of these from Mrs. Huffstetler in the media center when she introduced the project to the students.  The students will have plenty of time to complete the research and write the research paper in school.  Mrs. Harbuck will work with the students during computer time to complete this.  The students may have time to complete the presentation part at school as well depending on their time management.  The students will present on May 9 to the fourth grade students.  Thank you so much!!!

Kemp - Brazile 2/26/2014

Parents-

Strange to be able to have a plan for a full week and it looks like we’re going to make it. We’ve completed our Social Studies (WWII) and Science (Electricity and Magnetism) units. So, we’re starting up our next units now. In Science, we’re working on Cells and Microorganisms. Social Studies has us working on “Cold War to Present.” Due to the many changes in schedule, I’ve had to alter the units a little so we could fit everything in before the CRCT. I’m always a little amused to see our outline for the year and then see our testing calendar. Even though we’re not scheduled to complete everything by the time of the big tests, we’ll still be expected to show it. I’ve set it up so the kids will be shown all of the information before they’re tested.

If you’re looking for the new units, I’ve created them in a new spot. http://BrazileEducation.com .   I have the subjects listed, so you just click on the subject and then the unit of study. When you’re ready to exit, click the “X” at the top of the unit.

The kids have been told to write the address in their agenda. If you don’t add the “e” to the end of my name, you’ll end up learning all about the educational system of Brazil. Interesting, but it won’t help you know what your kid is doing in class. Speaking of which, if they’re working on the projects at home – something’s up. We set time aside every day to research and work. If they have to complete a lot at home, they’re not using their time wisely at school.

In Math, we’re working mainly on division to try and get everyone at 100% all the time. I’ve used benchmark tests throughout the year to determine their math needs. I’m using another diagnostic test to narrow it down as we approach the end of the year. The main issues we’re hitting now is over-confidence and rushing through tests. Some still struggle with concepts, but if we can get them all to slow down we’ll see better results.

Found a great article in Scholastic magazine (http://www.scholastic.com/parents/resources/article/thinking-skills-learning-styles/6-life-skills-kids-need-future). It’s an easy, interesting read if you’re bored sometime.

A few reminders:

Writing Assessment March 5 (information goes home today)

Book Swap March 7 (information was emailed yesterday and hard copies go home today)

Art Show March 7 (information goes home today)

Middle School Visits March 27 (permission forms go home today)

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Kemp is so excited to have our first BOOK SWAP.  Students can bring in gently used books (no more than 3) to swap.  In order to have this event, we will need parent volunteers.  Please click on the link to sign up to help on Friday, March. 7th.  The attached flyer explains more about the event.  Look for the flyer to come home with your child.

Thanks for your support!

Kemp - Brazile 2/19

Parents-

First day back felt like I worked a double-shift. I’m sure the kids a little tired too after the break.

Thanks for so many nice gifts and cards. You’ve made “Teacher Appreciation” very nice. In return I’ve given your kids a penny.

Sounds really bad in that context, but I really had planned to give them a penny regardless. I’m just that kind of guy…

Actually, I’d love for you to have a conversation with your child about the penny. The pennies were minted in 1943, a time when copper was rationed due to World War II. These pennies were made of steel and most have some form of rust on them. We checked them out with a magnet so they could see the difference in that aspect with copper pennies. Ask them about rationing during the war…

We’ll have our Science unit test Friday covering Magnetism and Electricity. With all the weather delays, I think we’ve been studying this forever. Our Social Studies test is next Tuesday covering WWII.

Friday, we’ll also have our weekly Computation and Problem Solving tests, along with our Spelling test.

Next week, we’ll get started on our Cold War to 1975 unit in Social Studies and the Cells and Organisms unit in Science. Spelling will continue with the next sorts and in Reading, we’ll continue with Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. For Writing, we’re working on our stories focusing on pulling together our lessons for great beginnings, details, and great endings. Those will be completed in class and turned in next week.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Thanks,

Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile - Valentine's Day

Parents-

The kids will have the opportunity to exchange Valentine's Day cards Wednesday morning. They do not have to participate if they do not want to. We ask the kids to bring in a paper bag or small box with their name prominently displayed. We'll line those in the hall outside our classroom. As the kids arrive Wednesday, they can distribute the cards.

Thanks,

Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile 2/7/2014

Parents-

Another week down. It was a full week for a change, but don’t get used to it. Next week, we’re out Thursday and Friday due to furlough days and the following week, we’re out Monday and Tuesday. The schedule has thrown off our unit test dates, but we’ll make it work. We’re close to wrapping up the Science Electricity and Magnetism unit and will have the unit test Friday, February 21st. With Social Studies, we’ll complete the WWII unit with our test on Tuesday, February 25th.

Monday is our last day to turn in the Six Flags Reading Log for the kids to earn a free ticket to Six Flags. Check out the links below (or the Dec 13 email archive through our “News” page on the class website).

·                     Read to Succeed Reading Log (English)

·                     Read to Succeed Reading Log (Spanish)

·                     Parent Letter (English)

·                     Parent Letter (Spanish)

In Reading, we’re working through Lois Lowry’s Number the Stars, a story about a 13 year old’s experience in WWII Denmark. I’ll continue to model how to think while reading, as well as pointing out elements of the writing.

For Writing, it’s still integrated throughout the Social Studies and Science units. We do have a narrative piece we started today and will work on through the next week of school.

In Math, we’re working on Volume as a class. Everyone did well on the skills test today and we’ll focus on the Volume Pool Project this next “week.” I need the kids on IXL covering computation skills. We work on it daily and some have gotten a little lackadaisical with their effort. The 2014 CRCT skills breakdown increases to 55% this year (last year was 50%). That’s a big increase on an area that is traditionally a tough area.

Spelling continues and next week, the kids will receive their new words which will cover this next Monday through Wednesday and the following Wednesday through Friday.

There is still a stomach bug running through the school, so watch for any “under the weather” signs.

Also, check out our student showcase on the class website (www.shanebrazile.com) in your free time. I try to rotate the students’ work through there, so check them out.

Please let me know if there are any concerns.

Thanks,

Shane Brazile

Kemp - 5th grade

Dear 5th grade parents,

We are beginning the process of creating the DVD for the 5th grade slideshow. As many of you know, during the graduation celebration on the last day of school, the slideshow is presented to the parents and is later shown to the kids after the celebration.  We cannot create this lifelong memory without your help.

We are requesting the help of one parent per classroom.  This is such an easy, quick way that you can help without leaving the comfort of your home or your pj's (if you wish).  This parent needs to be someone who is computer literate.  We will soon be requesting that each child send in a cd to this room parent with 5-7 pictures.  The room parent will then create one cd with all of the files of childrens’ pictures for the class on it. This is the disc that we will use to create the slide show. Detailed instructions will be given as to how to format this disc.

If you are interested in helping out, please email your child’s teacher.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Kim Even
