Rock Eagle

I just woke up from a long nap. I was exhausted. Rock Eagle was a lot of fun and a lot of activity. I hope the kids that went enjoyed it.

I would like to thank Mr. Bush, Mrs. Crittenden, Mrs. Jackson, and Mrs. Mascheri for being chaperones. They were great and this would not have been as great without them. Besides the first meal, that was the best we've ever seen the cafeteria after meals. And the cabins were in great shape! Thanks to the chaperones!

Thanks also to the kids. They were well behaved and that's very appreciated!

Have a great weekend!
Shane Brazile

Kemp - 9/23 - Urgent

Parents –

If your child is not attending Rock Eagle, please let me know if they will be attending school or not. (We have a plan for them, we just need to know how many will attend, so we can get them in an adequately-sized classroom.)

For those attending Rock Eagle, the supply list and letter went home before the fall break. I'm attaching another copy for your reference. A few things to make sure you remember of extreme importance:

·         Send any needed medication and the signed permission form in a bag with the child's full name on the outside.

·         Arrive by 7:10am and bring luggage to the wall outside our classroom (neatly lined up).

·         Send them with a towel.

·         Send them with deodorant. (This is really more of a benefit for the people around the kids.)

·         Send a pillow.

·         Send sheets or a sleeping bag.

·         Send a water bottle.

·         Send 2 pairs of shoes, including one that can be thrown away (socks too).

·         Send something for cool nights (sweatshirt, etc.)

·         Snacks can be sent in a bag labeled with their full name for throughout the trip. We'll take them up and make them available in our "home" base. They can't have food in the cabins at all.

·         The 5th grade team has said no electronics, including cell phones, are allowed (except for chaperones).

We will arrive Friday around 2:30pm. I'll send updates via Remind101 texts on your phone. Anyone not picked up by 3:00pm will be placed in ASP.

I plan on updating a Rock Eagle page throughout the trip with pictures. It will be linked on our homepage at www.BrazileEducation.com.

Chaperones, there will be a meeting before boarding the bus to go over expectations. If you want to drive your own vehicle, please let me know today. Your child can ride home with you Friday, but must ride the bus to Rock Eagle. If you're leaving your vehicle, please park in the front lot by the kindergarten playground.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks,

Shane Brazile

Important - Brazile Kemp 9/11

Parents –

Here's the important part of this email - If you are planning to chaperone the Rock Eagle trip, we need you to make the final payment by tomorrow. We have to finalize everything and will have to adjust our rosters for those not going.

Fall break is next week (I know you know this, but just want to make sure). Enjoy the time with your families. I look forward to hearing all about the educational trips you have planned! Personally, I'll be studying math in the Caribbean.

Please enjoy your time and be safe.

Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile 9/10

Parents -

- Progress Reports go home today. I'm sending one to each student. For more details, check out Synergy or send me a note and I'll get you what you need. Please sign the reports and return.

- We finished Gathering Blue today. The kids loved it. I'm impressed with how excited they are. We'll try to do the next book, Messenger, also by Lois Lowry. I only have one copy and I will be doing a read aloud. I'll project it on the screen, but feel free to get your student a copy if you'd like.

Thanks,
Shane Brazile

Rock Eagle

Fifth Grade Parents,

As of today, we are approximately $5000 short of having enough funds for the Rock Eagle field trip.  If you haven't paid, or contacted your child's teacher about payment, please send your payment in tomorrow.  If you are a chaperone, please make sure you have sent in the full $350 for both you and your child.  If you have already paid, please disregard this email.

Thanks,

Fifth Grade Teachers

Kemp - Brazile 9/5

Parents –

Another week down. Just want to fill you in on what we've accomplished and where we're going.

Here are the highlights, as always read on if you want more. Ignore the rest if you're busy, I won't be offended.

·         Math – moving to whole number multiplication next week

·         Reading – working on skills through the novel, Gathering Blue

·         Writing – working on building up writing with details

·         Spelling – the kids need to think more about how patterns affect sound

·         Social Studies and Science – project work continues

We finished up our Place Value unit in math and had our benchmark for the next unit, Multiplication with Whole Numbers. We'll be looking at understanding multiplication, specifically that in two digit multiplication, it's the ones place and tens place being multiplied. We'll have a computation test, problem solving test, and the skills test next Friday (based on what we accomplish during the week). Any kids looking for something to do at home should jump on IXL for a while. I talked to some of the kids this past week about my plan in math, and I'll fill them all in Monday. I'd like to encourage them to do some extra work on IXL. Any student who completes an hour of IXL work during the week (Saturday to Friday) will be eligible for a 5 point bonus on a math test. My hope is that they won't need the bonus with the extra effort.

In Reading, we're working on book 2 of Lois Lowry's Giver series – Gathering Blue. I was really impressed by their insight. I've never had anyone "get" the color inferences until this class. I thought I would have to "baby-step" them into it. I was wrong. Ask them about the book, I hope you see the same excitement I see.

In Writing, we're working on details. I'm looking for it in the journal entries we complete during the week and in their Social Studies and Science work. We discuss how details enhance the understanding in our reading and I'm trying to show them how that translates to all writing.

With Social Studies and Science, we're still working on the project units (Civil War and Constructive/Destructive Forces). I don't do traditional lectures, but we still talk quite a bit about our subjects. Yesterday, after I decided I "didn't want to teach anymore," we went outside to identify destructive forces at work in our "backyard" (the school's backyard, not my backyard – can you see me walking them down Corner Road…). They really seemed to like it when I wasn't teaching.

We're working on the spelling throughout the year. The big issue, even though I explain it daily, is that the kids aren't thinking about how the spelling patterns affect the sound. They'll write that their words all have a "g" or they're all verbs. So much effort to not have to think about spelling…If only we could harness it for good. I've been very strict in the grading in regards to their Word Study sheets so I'm hoping they see that they need to put in some more brain effort.

I think they're starting to understand that most everything we do in this class is focused on thinking. It's the process that's the most important. I don't care if they have a bunch of big words, I want to see that they understand the topic. If they master the thinking, they'll be smarter. They can work on making it pretty later.

Thanks for your support and have a great weekend,

Shane Brazile
