FW: Counselor Newsletter

Hope you weren't as disappointed with the eclipse yesterday as I was. I really didn't peak until around 6:30, well after it was behind trees, houses, clouds for me. My kids were mad.

Anyhow, I've attached the counselor's newsletter. Also, Monday is Jump Rope for Heart. Please have them bring in their money and wear tennis shoes. It's also the start of Red Ribbon Week so they should wear red.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Please forward the following reminder to parents who have not submitted their child's kindergarten photo:

Dear 5th Grade Parents,

In previous years, yearbook has included each child's kindergarten picture as part of the 5th grade pages.  In order to do it again this year, we need a Kindergarten or Pre-K school photo of your child.  We need your help!  Please scan your original picture (NOT a copy) and email it to slasolana@aol.com.  If you do not have access to a scanner, send in your child's picture labeled with their name and teacher's name.  (You will get your picture back.)  The deadline for sending in pictures is Friday, November 21st.   Remember that photos in good condition will scan to be much clearer than faded or bent photos.

Thanks,

Lisa Solana & Daniella DeFoor

Kemp - Brazile 10/13

Parents –

We made it through our first day of testing! All went well. Please make sure they have #2 pencils for testing this week. Thanks!

They seem to be dropping like flies. There's a bunch going around now and we've had several kids out lately (and more going). We ran out of the wipes that were sent in. If you'd like to send in more, I'd appreciate it. If your child feels sick, we will have them make up the Iowa test when they return (as long as it's within the testing window).

I'm still entering in the final grades for the first quarter. I'll let you know when they're finalized.

Thanks,

Shane Brazile

Brazile - Kemp 10/8

Parents-

Hope your week is going well so far. We're working hard here as the quarter winds down. It ends Friday, October 10. Report cards will go home during conferences later in the month. To sign up for a conference, visit our class website (http://BrazileEducation.com). On the menu bar at top, find "Class Links." The conference sign up link is in that section. Or, since I have it handy - here's the direct link

Administration has asked us to remove the links after Friday so we can finalize the schedule. After that, we'll assign the remaining times and send home notice. So....please sign up for what works best for you.

Testing occurs next week. This is the blurb I'm supposed to send to you regarding testing and middle school:

In the past, middle school has used a combination of CRCT and IOWA test scores for Advanced Content (AC) classes in middle school, with more of an emphasis on the IOWA score.  However, with the new Georgia milestone (replacement for the CRCT) coming into play, they are not really sure how the Milestone test is going to play into their decision making process.  The IOWA test may be the major determining factor in class placement.  Report card grades and teacher recommendations are not a considering factor in class placement.

Fifth grade students will take the IOWA test next Monday through Thursday (Oct. 13 – 16).  Please make sure your child has eaten a good breakfast, had a good night's sleep, and is on time to school each day.

Please let me know if you have any questions or have trouble signing up for conferences.

Thanks,
Shane Brazile

Brazile - Kemp

Parents –

I've decided to move our Science unit test and project due date to this Friday. I told the kids today so hopefully, they're all aware.

Thanks,

Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile 10/3

Parents-

  • Attached is a letter from our principal concerning the upcoming testing.
  • Quarter ends next week. Report cards will be delivered during conferences (grades will be available online though if you have received your Synergy log in from the office).
That pretty much sums it up. If you need a Synergy log in, the county requires you to show ID at the office to get the information. Please let me know ahead of time so I can make sure the Synergy contact has it ready in the office before you arrive.

Finishing up our project units this week and next. In Social Studies, those that have put the most work/thought into the projects are the ones who know the most on the test. That may seem obvious, but I've been stressing to the kids that taking the easy way out and not putting thought into it may meet the project standard but isn't helping them learn. Only they know if they're truly trying.

In Reading, we've begun Messenger by Lois Lowry. Kids seem to love it so far. It gets better and they're making great connections. If I could get them to think in Math like they think when we're reading.....

Speaking of which, I think the biggest obstacles we face deal with getting the kids to think deeply and critically. I'm working with some other teachers and researching to find ways to "trick" them into thinking. In other words, I'm trying to find ways to get them more excited about school.

Our next project units will try to move a little deeper into critical thinking, working our way into independent projects eventually.

In Math, we'll be moving to division next week. One thing I've implemented with the kids is error analysis. If they do not score well on a test, they can do an error analysis to earn some points back. They have to explain where they made their mistake and the correct solution. I'm also allowing this on the Social Studies test. The goal is for them to learn the material, so I want them to take advantage of this. On the Social Studies error analysis, I want them to write a paper explaining the correct answer to their missed questions. It can be a lot of work if they did poorly, but that's a consequence of not putting the effort in on the front end.

Hope you all have a great weekend! Roll Tide (or War Eagle or Go Dawgs)!!
Shane Brazile
