Dear Principals,

We would like to invite your rising 6th grade girls to our upcoming Jr. TEC (Technology, Engineering & Computer) Camp, which will be held June 24-25,  2015 on the Georgia Tech campus.

This fun and interactive camp is hosted by the Georgia Tech Women in Engineering Program and is designed to give young girls an early introduction to the exciting world of engineering with the hope of inspiring them to eventually consider college majors and careers as engineers.  More information on the camp can be found in the attached flyer.

We would also like to ask for your assistance in circulating the attached TEC Camp flyer to the parents of your current 5th grade girls.  Please note that the application deadline for TEC Camp is Monday, April 6, 2015, and applicant decisions will be made by Monday, April 20, 2015.

Thank you for your time and assistance in disseminating this information.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

FW: Please forward the following letter to your parents

Dear Parents,

If your child will be going to LOVINGGOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL next year, and would be interested in  participating on the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team there next year, please see the letter below from the media center specialist at Lovinggood.  Your child does not have to have any experience on Kemp's team in order to participate -  he/she just needs to be an avid reader who would be interested in being in an academic competition on the 20 books nominated this month for the Georgia Book of the Year for 2016. Please contact Ms. Crumbley at the email address below for more information.  Lovinggood has a great team, finishing only one question away from first place in the state this year in the competition.

March 9, 2015

Dear Students and Parents:

We have just completed the 2015 season for Reading Bowl and many students are ready to begin preparing for the 2016 season.  The books are ready for check out in the media center and on-line through Mackin Via and Destiny using individual user names and passwords.  I created a Resource List (found under the catalog tab), Reading Bowl 15-16 eBooks .

On Thursday, March 26, there will be an ice cream social for interested students who will be in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade next year.  Each student brings one topping to share.  Ice cream is provided.  Parents are invited to an informational meeting at the same time.  The ice cream social will begin at 4:30.

Students who are unable to attend may pick up a reading bowl book list from the media center or request one through email.  The team will begin regular meetings on April 2 and most Thursdays until the end of school.  Students will be allowed to check out books for the summer.  Regular fall meetings will begin on Thursdays after Open House 2015.

If you are interested in attending, please let me know so that there will be enough ice cream for the social.

I can be reached through email at renee.crumley@cobbk12.org .

Mr. Rhodes, Ms. Denton and I look forward to meeting new team mates and welcoming back the veterans.

Sincerely,

Renée Crumley

Media Specialist, Lovinggood Middle School

Kemp - Brazile

Parents,

The third quarter ends tomorrow (Wednesday). Report cards will be distributed on the 18th. If you can't wait, Synergy has it all online. (I still have a few grades to enter though.)

Thanks to everyone for making Teacher Appreciation Week (and a half because of snow days) so good! I thank you for the gifts and notes. Very generous of you all!

I have a note about our Boosterthon fundraiser a little lower in this email. If you need to register your child online, go to www.funrun.com and use our class code 1479-7835.

This next part might be the strangest thing I write (I hope) this year. Your kids stink. Really. They have specials first thing in the morning and they're running a lot in PE. So, they're very sweaty and therefore very smelly. It gets bad throughout a long day, especially after recess on a warm day. I'm afraid they're growing up and need to address the deodorant usage. Please. 28 sweaty kids….

Now, back to normal school info.

The Boosterthon Fun Run kicked off yesterday with a fun Pep Rally and I am super excited about this year's program. Our team name is The Brazilians!  The Boosterthon Fun Run program involves all students in a fun, team building, fitness event while helping our school raise much-needed funds. The central focus of this year's character program is COMMUNITY. This year's character theme is ROCK'N TOWN LIVE, and the Boosterthon Team will take students on a fun-filled journey teaching them the importance of building community with this fun, music festival theme.

Through the Boosterthon, I receive 10% of what our class raises to help go toward supplies for our classroom. On top of that, our entire school is raising support to go toward Playground Improvements at our school. My goal for our class is to raise $1000.00

Here's how you can help:

REGISTER YOUR STUDENT- To log in pledges, please register your child on funrun.com using our class access code 1479-7835.  Students receive a FREE GIFT just by having their parent or guardian register them on funrun.com.

GET PLEDGES by connecting your student with 10 sponsors. You can also use social media in the pledging process and pay online—all of this is on funrun.com. Be sure to capture and record the e-mail address of each sponsor, as they will have an easy opportunity to pay for your student's pledge by credit card online.

COME TO THE BOOSTERTHON FUN RUN NEXT WEEK! Remember, students will be running 30-35 laps, and we would love to have lots of support for our team!

Thank you for supporting our classroom and our school!

I'll see you next week at the Boosterthon Fun Run!

From our class:

We're getting into "crunchtime" with school. Testing is not too far off (I'll give details when I have them). I've spoken to the class quite a bit about the importance of letting me know if they don't fully understand something. Whatever the subject, I can help them if they let me know. I told them to tell you if they felt embarrassed telling me so I could help.  So, if they tell you they're not getting something, please let me know. I go over things in class that I see, but if I don't have an indicator in class, I may not realize they're struggling.

In Reading, we're starting Pictures of Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff. Great book for details and imagery.

For Writing, we're continuing to focus on details in our writing and developing the idea. I'm also having them work on parts of speech review and conventions. In all of 5th, we've noticed that capitalization is an area we need to improve.

Math, we're working on line plots this week. The kids have shown that they have a good handle on this, so we should be able to move on after this week.

Social Studies has us finishing our WWII unit tomorrow with a unit test. The snow days threw us off badly here. We spent some extra time in class completing projects and going over lessons, so we should all be caught up. Next up is the "Cold War to 1975" unit.

In Science, we're starting the "Classification of Living Organisms" unit this week.

I gave the kids another spelling benchmark this past week. I should have them in their final spelling sort groups by the end of the week. I hope to see a lot of growth obviously. The goal is to be in the Syllables and Affixes late stage by the end of 5th (~sort 40 on, then into the Derivational stage).

I encourage all students to perform error analysis on the tests I return. For math tests, they must correct the problems on another page and explain what went wrong and how they fix it. I give ½ credit for every one they work out. I only have a few students doing this, but it's a great way to earn back points as well as understand their mistakes. The analysis is always due the day after a test is given back.

Please let me know if you have any questions,

Shane Brazile

I had a parent ask about a roster for our class. Figure there might be more that need it, so I'm attaching it.

Thanks,

Kemp - Brazile - 2/10/15

Parents-

I hope everyone is doing well. We're working hard here. Here are the highlights, followed by the details:

·         Several compliments for our kids recently.

·         Valentine's Day – Kids can bring in cards for class and others, be sure to bring bag/box to set out to receive.

·         Reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

·         Math, covering volume

·         Social Studies – WWII

·         Science – Cells and Microorganisms

·         Language Arts – Parts of Speech and conventions

·         Writing – Citing facts to support writing

I've had several compliments from other teachers and staff about our group. I was told by one specialist that ours was her favorite class because they're so willing to try activities. Another (the media specialist) talked about how willing the kids are to try new things and how diligent they are about research. She led a class to help them expand their research abilities and they did an outstanding job with it. Today, our principal said how impressed she was with how they moved from listening to activity with their devices and back again. It shows their maturity and responsibility using the devices so well. I'm proud to have a class that stands out for their independence, resourcefulness, responsibility, and academic initiative!

Friday, we will celebrate Valentine's Day. I ask that the kids include all in our class of 28. If they would like to get them to others outside of our class too, that's great. We will set each child's labeled bag or box outside our classroom Friday morning. Then the kids will distribute the Valentines in the morning. We will not be having a "celebration" as some have asked. I ask that everyone be mindful of the nut allergies in our class and other classes.

Our focus of study in each subject is listed above. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I would like to reiterate to all that if your child is having trouble in an area, please let me know. I work with them in class and I try to cover each student that I know is struggling with a topic. However, if they appear to "get it" in class, I may not spend the time they truly need. If they express confusion at home, just shoot me an email and I can help clear it all up.

Thanks!

Shane Brazile

Parents of rising 6th grade students going to Lost Mountain Middle School,

Attached is a flyer about the upcoming Coffee Talk at Lost Mountain.  Below is some general information from the LMMS counselors about the monthly Coffee Talks.

Ms. Wilkes does a coffee talk once a month (first Friday of the month) in our media center.  Parents can come whenever they want and or drop in. Ms. Wilkes will start with a "state of the school address" where she lets parents know what is going on in the school and what is coming up and then she has open agenda where parents ask questions.  It is a great informal way to meet Ms. Wilkes, the counselors, PTSA, administrator and to know what is going on in the school.  Please share with your 5th grade parents.

We will still do the parent meeting at night later on this year. This is just an additional opportunity for our 5th grade parents.
