Class redesign

Parents –

Thank you to everyone who has given feedback on the new classroom design. The kids are. The main component of the redesign that we would need is the collaboration wall. It's the chalkboard wall. I'm pretty bad at asking for help, even worse at asking for things. This makes me incredibly uncomfortable, but I think the end goal is important. Always, feel free to say no. What the class needs is (Does anyone have this or have a connection for donation?)

·        thin plywood measuring 6' x 6' (or something close) for the chalkboard wall

·        Primer

·        Chalkboard paint (enough to cover the plywood for a couple coats ~72ft2)

·        Anyone to volunteer to prime and paint the plywood (I can do this if no one else wants this)

What the class could use (not imperative, just wants):

·        Small storage cabinet (preferably on wheels and lockable)

·        Bean bag chair

·        Suggestions/Ideas for what you think the ideal classroom should be

I've talked to the custodians about how to mount the board to the wall and I'll take care of the supplies for that.

If we get the supplies, we can prime and paint it before bringing it to school for mounting. Our custodian, William, will help me with this.

With that, I think we'll have enough to move forward. I'm going to try to rearrange some this Friday and then more next week. I think the sooner we move, the more we can capitalize on the kids' excitement.

Thanks again for your input and help.

Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile

Parents -

I hope you're all having a good winter break. I wanted to share with you an idea. I've had an idea for many years about how an ideal classroom would look and run. Ironically, I had this come up recently as a project in a class I'm taking. I showed a video to the class to get their input and criticism. I was surprised how excited they got about it. It made me believe that this could be a reality. The layout looks different and the way the class runs is different too. The new term that's going around for this is "Learning Commons." In a classroom, the kids would spend their day researching and creating. How is that different from what we do now? We ramp up their responsibility/independence and include more critical thinking projects.

Here's the video tour (with the help of the kids): http://brazile.education/videos/classroom-tour.mp4

In order to make it happen, I'd need some help with building and some supplies. Our "ideal" classroom features a chalkboard collaboration wall, a couple tables (round high-top and a drafting table), and a computer station. I have a small couch to donate, If we can't do it all, we'll start small. The kids were really excited about the chalkboard wall. If we could do it on some plywood panels and hang up, I think it would work well. I think we could take a Saturday or 2 and make it happen.

I'd like your feedback. The kids' mainly were positive, but were concerned they would not get to participate for long. I get that, but these kids seem to have really bought into the idea and that's half the battle with change. This would be the first "Learning Commons" classroom in Cobb, we could be instrumental in effecting positive change in our education system. The other feedback was about the 3d printer, but remember this is an "ideal" classroom and that's the dream for eventually. Right now, we want to focus on keeping the kids excited and becoming even deeper thinkers.

Please let me know your thoughts and whether you think this could be a reality.

Thanks!
Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile

Parents –

Thanks!! I so appreciate the class gift today! Not to mention all of the treats and gift cards all week. Very generous of you. I sent home "Thank you" cards, but I'm guessing several will not see them as I just cleaned them off the floor here. J Enjoy the break with your kids. It should start with a bang since they're hyped up on sugar from the Valentines!

Please see below about the final Rock Eagle payment.

Thank you again for your generosity!

Hola all,

Multicultural Night will be here on Friday March 18th 630-830pm and I wanted to be sure to remind you of three things:

3.      Click RSVP below to let us know you are coming! We need to know how much food our restaurant partners should prepare and bring. Please tell your friends and neighbors that everyone should RSVP! Click here to RSVP for MN

I have attached the flyer.

Gracias,

Kemp - Brazile

Parents -

A big "thanks" to Mrs. Tarpley and Mrs. Vansant (and all the kids who helped) for the Teacher Appreciation door decorations. Looks great! It's very appreciated.

We kicked off our new Social Studies unit today. I'm trying some new project ideas to get them more engaged. If they come to you with any confusion, please let me know. With one, the directions are in Morse Code. I've given them hints about how to solve it (using a Morse code translator), but I thought it would be fun for them. They have really taken to the problem-solving aspects of similar activities in the past. However, I really don't want them trying to figure it out character by character.

Anyhow, thanks for all you do!

Kemp - Brazile 2/5

Parents -

Just a couple notes as we head into the weekend. Next Friday, we'll celebrate Valentine's Day by having the kids exchange cards in the morning. We have 26 students in the class. I ask that they include everyone if they're participating. They'll need a box or bag to set in the hallway for everyone to deposit their cards in. Feel free to decorate as you want. Mrs. Thomas has asked for any extra Valentine's cards to be sent in so we can send them to a neighborhood in need. Feel free to participate by sending in extras. I'll forward them to the office who will then send them with a parent volunteer.

We started our Classification unit this week in Science. We'll start our Cold War to Present Day unit in Social Studies next week. In Math, we'll be continuing our conversion unit before starting with Volume the following week. We finished reading Number the Stars today. I'd like to continue our Giver series, but we do not have enough copies of Messenger by Lois Lowry. If you would like for your child to have a copy, that would be great. I'l do the read aloud but it's much more effective if they can follow along.

Have a great weekend!
Shane Brazile
