Kemp - Brazile

Parents-

Our last full day is over. The next two days will be early release at 12:30pm. Tomorrow is graduation. The ceremony will be held at Burnt Hickory Baptist Church from 8:00-10:30. The kids will come to school as normal and then ride the bus to the ceremony. Those that are returning to school after the ceremony will ride the bus back and have lunch before dismissing for the day (or going to ASP). The ceremony will be streamed and information should be coming from administration soon about the details.

On Wednesday, the kids will have a pizza lunch before dismissal.

I'd like to thank you all for a good year. The kids did really well and hopefully built up their independence, responsibility, and critical-thinking. While it is important to have good grades, it is not the main thing. I hope they understand that they must always work hard, give their best effort, and never give up. If they master these skills, they will be successful.

I hope you all enjoy a good summer break with your family. Be safe!

Thank you,

Shane Brazile

Kemp - 5th

Parents-

Tomorrow is Field Day! Please make sure they have water and wear sunscreen. A change of clothes, along with a towel, would be a good idea as they will be getting wet in the water stations. We'll start Tug-of-war at 1:30. From 11:30-1:00, they'll be able to sign each other's yearbooks.

We sent home a lot of information about the rest of the school year. I've placed much of it on our website under "Class Links." In a nutshell

May 13: Field Day

May 16: Crazy Hair Day/Human Growth and Development Classes

May 17: Look-a-like Day/ Human Growth and Development Classes

May 18: Wacky Tacky Day

May 19: Pick a Decade Day

May 20: College Day

May 24: Early Release (12:20pm)/Graduation at Burnt Hickory Church 8:00am-10:30am

May 25: Early Release (12:20pm)/"Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" program/Pizza Party/Last Walk/Last Day

Our "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" program is the last day of school. We'll start around 8:00am and one lucky parent from each 5th grade class will go up against a representative from each class. If you would like your name thrown into the hat to be our parent rep, let me know by tomorrow morning.

Thanks,

Shane Brazile

·        May 10: Bowling Trip (informational permission slip going home today) 9:00-1:00

·        May 11: Career presentations

·        May 13: Field day for 5th

·        May 16/17: Human Growth and Development Classes

·        May 20: College Day

·        May 24: Early Release 12:30pm

·        May 24: Graduation at Burnt Hickory Church 8:00am – 10:30am

·        May 25: Early Release 12:30pm

·        May 25: "Are You Smarter than A 5th Grader" show 8:00am

·        May 25: Fifth grade final walk ~11:45am

I'll let you know more about the end of the year activities soon.

Thanks,

Kemp - Brazile

Parents -

The big trip is almost here. We leave for Rock Eagle Wednesday. Those not going will complete activities with a teacher here at school. I'll have the information for which teacher tomorrow.

Those going on the trip should have the information they need. If not, it's on our webpage, under "Class Links."

Students should all be at the classroom by 7:10am. We will leave the school by 7:30am. Bring all luggage to the classroom and line it up neatly on the wall outside of our classroom. Once our bus gets here, the kids will carry their luggage to the bus.

I'll update our website about the trip on the "Rock Eagle" page. I will use our text reminders to let you know when we're arriving back at school on Friday.

Friday, please do not arrive at the bus port before 2:25. We are scheduled to arrive at 2:30, after the regular school buses leave. Any kids not picked up by 3:00 will placed in ASP and will be charged accordingly.

Remember to send any medication with the proper form completed. Even if they might need something for a headache, we can't give it unless they have sent it in and a form is completed.

Kids can bring a snack for each day. I'll collect them when they arrive Wednesday. The snacks should be in a sealed bag with their name visible. We will keep these in our common area, no snacks or drinks will be allowed in the cabins. We will not have access to a refrigerator. Please send only water for drinks.

There a no electronics allowed, including phones. I know many use their phones for cameras, but we can not allow them. They will not get reception in most places at Rock Eagle anyhow.

The kids will be busy all day. There will be a break for snacks and to visit the snack bar/souvenir shop. Any money sent should be secured and is completely their responsibility.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks,
Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile 4/21

Parents-

I'm attaching a letter referencing the career project that your 5th grader will start tomorrow. In a nutshell, it's saying that every year we have a lot of kids wanting to research being a pro athlete. The point of the project is for kids to identify the training and experienced needed for a profession and many times this is lost on those researching athletes. The note says to let me know if you want them studying athletes. I don't really need a note myself, but just remind your student to focus on the hard work and dedication needed for those professions.

Thanks,

Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile

Parents -

We've made it through testing! Everyone survived and we made it through relatively unscathed.

Contrary to what the kids think, I will continue to teach, they'll continue to work, and school will go on.

We're still working on our Instructional Videos. Next week, we have one more video and Rock Eagle. Information went home about the trip. If you don't have the info sheet, I'll get you a copy.

Thanks,
Shane Brazile

Testing - Kemp

Parents-

Our first day of testing went well. Everyone was able to complete the Reading sections without issues. Tomorrow, we take on the Language Arts section. I know they're all looking forward to it (it has more writing involved). Friday will be Math, followed by Science and Social Studies the next week.

Make sure they're resting so we see their best effort each day.

Thanks!

Testing - Kemp

Parents-

Testing has finally arrived! The kids have practiced quite a bit so they're familiar with how it works on the computers. Should be second nature now. They've seen all the material and I feel like they're ready. I just need their best effort.

We start in the morning around 8 and most days it will last about 2 hours. Actual test time hovers around 70-90 minutes. They'll break in between sections for a bathroom break and stretch. We should finish each day by 10:30-11:00. Our specials time is 1:35-2:00 during testing week. They need to be rested each day. Thanks!

The kids seemed very surprised to find out that we'll continue to work from now until the end of the year. They have Social Studies and Science projects - the Instructional Videos. They'll research a standard and create their own educational movie. They're working on Social Studies this week and Science next week. We'll look at introduction to 6th grade standards after that. In Reading, we're continuing with Pictures of Hollis Woods. In Math, it's review and preview for 6th. I'll only test them on 5th grade skills, though.

Remind them how effort is the key with this testing thing (and life).

Thanks!
Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile

Parents-

It's Report Card Day! Personally, I dreaded those days. Always worried I might get surprised. But, with online grades, this seems like a formality now. The report cards are in their possession now and will be coming home with the signature card. Please sign that and return it tomorrow.

If you go online now, it will probably show a different grade for the 3rd quarter. They system online isn't perfect. I drop a grade or 2 in math each quarter, but I don't like to do that until we have a few under our belt each quarter. Since I'm not dropping any right now in Math, last quarter's grades do not reflect any dropped grades either. It's right on the report cards, just not online right now. You shouldn't need to look at last quarter, but some of the kids have and they were freaking out.

Some of you have already sent in self-addressed, stamped envelopes for the final report card. Thanks. For those that haven't, please send them in the next few weeks. If we don't get them, you'll have to come by the office during the summer to pick them up.

Also, our class will be taking the end of year tests on the computers this year. The kids are excited about it and I've heard it means our scores will come back sooner (don't hold me to that part, it's just what I heard). We'll take some practice tests so they get used to it beforehand. I'll also send home a letter about it soon, too.

Please let me know if you have any questions,
Shane Brazile

Boosterthon

Hi parents!

Thank you for your support of the Fun Run program so far! As a school, we are over half way to our financial goal.

  • As a class, we have raised $27 pledge per lap
  • The most recent class incentive we've earned is Pop and Read.
  • BUT, we REALLY want to reach $30 (pledge per lap) level so we can have 1 hour of FREE TIME.

Will you help us?

  • We are asking families to connect to 2 more sponsors tonight to help us reach our goal!

Thank you for your support of Kemp Elementary School!

FW: One last favor this year....I hope

5th grade parents:

If your child is in an extra curricular activity (see examples below) you can submit a picture of them in their uniform/costume or of them performing the activity for possible use in the yearbook. If there are multiple kemp 5th graders that are on a team together or in a sport/activity together I would prefer a group picture of those students. Please note that this is for 5th graders ONLY!!!

Example activities (this is not an exhaustive list but to give you an idea):

Sports – football, soccer, baseball, swimming, gymnastics, cheerleading, horse back riding, wrestling, lacrosse, dance, etc

Chess

Music/Drama

Girl Scouts/Cub Scouts

The deadline to submit these extra curricular pictures is  THIS Friday, MARCH 11TH. You can either email it directly to daniella.defoor@comcast.net or submit it through our eShare site (www.hjeShare.com & code: cougarpix).

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the email mentioned above.

Class redesign

Parents –

Thank you to everyone who has given feedback on the new classroom design. The kids are. The main component of the redesign that we would need is the collaboration wall. It's the chalkboard wall. I'm pretty bad at asking for help, even worse at asking for things. This makes me incredibly uncomfortable, but I think the end goal is important. Always, feel free to say no. What the class needs is (Does anyone have this or have a connection for donation?)

·        thin plywood measuring 6' x 6' (or something close) for the chalkboard wall

·        Primer

·        Chalkboard paint (enough to cover the plywood for a couple coats ~72ft2)

·        Anyone to volunteer to prime and paint the plywood (I can do this if no one else wants this)

What the class could use (not imperative, just wants):

·        Small storage cabinet (preferably on wheels and lockable)

·        Bean bag chair

·        Suggestions/Ideas for what you think the ideal classroom should be

I've talked to the custodians about how to mount the board to the wall and I'll take care of the supplies for that.

If we get the supplies, we can prime and paint it before bringing it to school for mounting. Our custodian, William, will help me with this.

With that, I think we'll have enough to move forward. I'm going to try to rearrange some this Friday and then more next week. I think the sooner we move, the more we can capitalize on the kids' excitement.

Thanks again for your input and help.

Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile

Parents -

I hope you're all having a good winter break. I wanted to share with you an idea. I've had an idea for many years about how an ideal classroom would look and run. Ironically, I had this come up recently as a project in a class I'm taking. I showed a video to the class to get their input and criticism. I was surprised how excited they got about it. It made me believe that this could be a reality. The layout looks different and the way the class runs is different too. The new term that's going around for this is "Learning Commons." In a classroom, the kids would spend their day researching and creating. How is that different from what we do now? We ramp up their responsibility/independence and include more critical thinking projects.

Here's the video tour (with the help of the kids): http://brazile.education/videos/classroom-tour.mp4

In order to make it happen, I'd need some help with building and some supplies. Our "ideal" classroom features a chalkboard collaboration wall, a couple tables (round high-top and a drafting table), and a computer station. I have a small couch to donate, If we can't do it all, we'll start small. The kids were really excited about the chalkboard wall. If we could do it on some plywood panels and hang up, I think it would work well. I think we could take a Saturday or 2 and make it happen.

I'd like your feedback. The kids' mainly were positive, but were concerned they would not get to participate for long. I get that, but these kids seem to have really bought into the idea and that's half the battle with change. This would be the first "Learning Commons" classroom in Cobb, we could be instrumental in effecting positive change in our education system. The other feedback was about the 3d printer, but remember this is an "ideal" classroom and that's the dream for eventually. Right now, we want to focus on keeping the kids excited and becoming even deeper thinkers.

Please let me know your thoughts and whether you think this could be a reality.

Thanks!
Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile

Parents –

Thanks!! I so appreciate the class gift today! Not to mention all of the treats and gift cards all week. Very generous of you. I sent home "Thank you" cards, but I'm guessing several will not see them as I just cleaned them off the floor here. J Enjoy the break with your kids. It should start with a bang since they're hyped up on sugar from the Valentines!

Please see below about the final Rock Eagle payment.

Thank you again for your generosity!
