Brazile - Kemp 8/28

Parents –

Quick note – thanks for sending in Rock Eagle permission slips. We'll be able to get spots and buses reserved with an accurate count.

I sent home Performing Arts permission slips today. I know a few didn't bring these as I've just found a couple on the floor.

There is also a stack of papers that were returned. I normally won't have such a large stack but we were advised not to enter new grades into our system due to an upgrade. I like to get papers back quickly under normal circumstances. I've advised the kids to check Synergy once a week at least, so they can see if they're missing anything. This is especially important for those who like to remain anonymous on their assignments (they don't put a name on the paper). I had about a dozen from math assignments. Somewhat frustrating. I think they were all claimed today, so I'll replace the zeroes online soon. Any missing assignments (zeroes online) can be turned in still.

Thanks,

Shane Brazile

Kemp - Rock Eagle

Parents -

We need the Rock Eagle permission slips and first payment tomorrow. If you've already paid, thanks! If we're not able to collect enough funds, we will not be able to have the trip. Also, if we don't have all of the permission slips returned, we can't reserve enough spots.

Thanks,
Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile 8/21

Parents -

Good morning! Just want to cover a couple things.

First, not to sound like a Kindergarten teacher, but I'm so proud of you! The first wave of projects usually elicit some anxiety in the parents. The kids seem to be handling it well. We always have growing pains with it. Remember this is usually their first experience (academically) with this level of freedom and responsibility. I want them to feel some pressure, but I want them to problem solve and discover how to work through deadlines. I will get them all to a B level with these first projects (whatever it takes) so they understand the how of completing the projects.

Second, we're starting our next book, Gathering Blue, by Lois Lowry. It's the next book in The Giver series. Some of the kids inquired about getting their own copy. They're welcome to get their own copy whether it's hard copy or on a device. Currently, we only have enough for 23 of our 28 to have a hard copy so they're sharing. We'll try to continue the series with Messenger after this. There will be a lot of sharing with that since I only have a few copies. I will read it aloud to them as it starts to tie the first two books together. Great series and offers a good bit of deep inferences.

Thanks,
Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile 8/18

Parents-

Most important - Tomorrow is picture day. Forms went home today.

Today was packed. I think they're a little overwhelmed. I gave them a ton of information today and we seemed to work against the clock all day.

We started our projects today. Those that have devices can bring them (if I have the BYOD form and the county Tech form on file). I'm able to get 3 on desktops, 4 in media center, and 4 on ipads in the classroom at a time. I've encouraged them to use the time to research only and keep notes. I thought they did a great job today with all they had thrown at them. I did have a few that had trouble with the freedom during the research time, but I think we're getting a handle on it. Anxiety was a little high for some when they kept asking me what to write and I told them we had to research it. We'll work through it all. They thought it would be much faster if I just told them the answers.

J

Thanks,

Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile 8/15

Parents-

Another week down. Finally. WE've spent a good chunk of the week completing needed benchmarks and pre-tests. With that out of the way, we can finally get into teaching and learning.

Here are the highlights of the email:
  • Social Studies and Science units should only be worked on at school.
  • Students can bring own devices next week if proper forms have been completed.
  • Unit grades will build up in the online grade book (from C up to Bs and As).
  • Spelling groups and Reading groups start next week.
  • Homework isn't required, but I have a lot of resources online for them to check out.
  • We finished The Giver which is released tonight in theaters.
Feel free to read on or save for later...

I've introduced our Social Studies Civil War unit to the kids and we worked on one of the projects together today so they understand the "how." I showed the how we always start by reading directions, then taking notes of our research so we can complete the project afterwards. We will work more on these each day from this point forward. I do not want the kids working on these at home. The unit is designed so it works in stages teaching the kids about research and completing projects as we go. Parts are set up so they have to ask questions of me. It's my opportunity to teach them one on one about the subject matter or the process.

The units will receive a grade based on the number of projects completed. I'm aiming for each student to achieve at least the B level. If they want the A level, they'll work on the projects in that area during class while completing the B level. I'll enter the grades as they complete each stage. You may look online and see a C one day and once they complete the next level, it will change to a B.

We'll start Science projects next week. Our unit is the Constructive and Destructive Forces unit.

Since we're starting our research units, students can bring in their own devices as long as they connect through the BYOD network at school. I must also have signed technology and BYOD permission forms for them. If you have the paperwork at home, please send it in as soon as possible.

I don't have homework that I expect completed each week. However, I encourage them to read at least an hour each week. Math work can be helpful and IXL is a great site for that. I'll have their log ins soon for those new to Kemp. We have a plethora of instructional videos available for Science and Social Studies. They're entertaining and instructional.

Monday, we'll start our Spelling groups and Reading groups.

Speaking of reading, we completed The Giver by Lois Lowry. Just in time for the movie version to be released tonight. Don't be surprised if they ask to see it. The book was great, but I have no idea about the movie.

Have a great weekend and please let me know if you have any questions,
Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazle Urgent

Parents,

I don't like to send multiple emails in a day, but I had several parents indicate allergies on the Student Information Sheet survey.

I did not provide a prompt for more and I need to know the severity. More specifically, I need to know if their allergies are just consumption or airborne as well.

If your child has an allergy, please email me as soon as possible to let me know.

Thanks,
Shane Brazile

Kemp - Brazile 8/7

Parents -

For this email, I'm posting the update to my blog. If you can't make the meeting, this will help. A survey is at the following link relating to the Rock Eagle trip. Please complete it for us.

The remainder of this email addresses Open House.

Open House, Thursday August 7, 6:30pm.

Open House gives you a chance to meet me and get any questions you have about my class answered.

My class is much different than traditional classrooms. I run a project-based, technology-infused classroom. Why? Engagement. Kids are surrounded by technology throughout their lives outside of school. I feel it's time they're surrounded by it inside school too. They're more engaged when working with technology, which translates into more work completion and better learning.

Why the project-based? Research shows that kids who "buy-in" with their learning retain more and have better understanding. With projects, we give kids choice of order and they have choice over how they research. I guide them through the process and help lead them through the steps of discerning what's important. It works and we're working on building their self-confidence, along with critical thinking skills and independence level. In that regard, all projects are completed at school only. Not at home. If a child is working on a project at home, something is wrong. Please let me know.

Is homework a waste of time? At least in elementary school, it may be. Research says it does little, if anything, to help kids learn. Through personal research, it is shown to frustrate and exhaust kids and parents. However, some parents want the homework given. I'm establishing activities that children can complete to enhance their studies. The activities are optional.

Here's a presentation from Open House. It's lacking some details, feel free to ask so I can fill in the blanks if you miss the Open House meeting.

Kemp - Brazile - First Day

Parents -

We have the first day in the books! I'm exhausted, not sure if they are or not. I tried to take it somewhat easy on them today. I'll ease them into the grind.

We went over our class rules (repeatedly) and completed a math assessment, as well as a spelling inventory. For fun, we read Ish by Peter Reynolds. It's a great book about a kid who overcomes his fear of not creating something perfectly. If you're curious, there's a video of it being read online. Came in handy when my book disappeared.

The rest of our week will be full of procedures and assessments. I'll introduce our project work later in the week. If you have not heard, I run a project-based classroom. We work through projects in most areas. I'll explain thoroughly at Open House. (Open House is this Thursday at 6:30pm).

I hope to see you all there!

If you have paperwork from Meet and Greet, return as soon as possible. Please remember the "Student Information Sheet" found on our class website under the "Blog" tab. (www.BrazileEducation.com

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks,
Shane Brazile
