· Math: got their skill assignments this week, look under >Subjects>Math on website for details
· Social Studies: Civil War projects, they should be turning things in now
· Science: Partner work on destructive forces project due on 17th.
· Love and Logic: Email following my novella here.
Short week, but we got a lot accomplished. We started the week with our Math skill assignments (found on "Math" page of our website). They work at least an hour on IXL for those skills each week and we take a test on Friday. We'll continue working on the skills that we've identified as weaknesses through benchmark testing . In Spelling, we're continuing the Words Their Way program. The kids are doing well with it, but I want them to make sure and do a thoughtful sort every day with their words (in other words, they need to think about it each day).
Social Studies projects and Science work continues. It's impressive how well they're doing with both subjects. We're trying to get all digital assignments submitted to my Evernote account (tsbrazile7.7f14406@m.evernote.com). Most have set up their own Evernote account and I encourage all to do so. Helps with organizing the work and is available on any device. If you see a confirmation email come through, then we've set up an account for them using the information you provided on the "Information survey." They'll need to enter the confirmation code to begin using the Evernote account.
We're shooting for September 17 a s a due date for the Science destructive forces projects with their partners. They're building models and presentations. Great work so far. The ipads from PTA are a great help and we love them.
We run into a technical issue every once in a while. I set everything up at the beginning based on my experience from previous years. This year, there are so many Apple devices and some is not compatible or not working as expected. So, I'm continually searching for alternatives. I have started listing apps on the "iPads" page under "Subjects" on our website. Most of the time, we'll download in class and start using. Don't worry, they're always free and I experiment with them before we download.
This first quarter, we're working on building responsibility, researching, and creativity as much as we are the facts. I'm not looking for perfection, I'm looking for effort and initiative.
Please check grades online. I'd like to take of concerns as soon as possible rather than the end of the quarter. Grades will fluctuate early in a quarter and start to level out midway. If you see a "0" we have a missing assignment and need to get it in.
Below you'll find an email from the Love and Logic Institute. I attended a conference for them when I first started teaching. Great strategies for discipline and parenting. I encourage you to sign up for their emails. Wish I could master the skills they teach, but it's an ongoing exercise. This week's message is about teaching responsibility and thought it fit in great with my philosophy.
Have a great weekend!
