Parents-

As we wind down our Friday, I’m finishing grades for today’s assessments. They look pretty good. Some are still getting the hang of turning in the Reading Logs and Word Study sheets. Reading logs aren’t too big of a deal (except they can’t go to the extended recess time), but the Word Study sheets affect their grade. I’ll accept them late, as long as they turn them in. I put a zero on the grade book for Reading Logs and Independent Word Study sheets not signed and I note that they weren’t signed. 99% of the time, I know they did the work, but the signature lets me know you saw them complete it all plus it helps hold them accountable. Probably falls into the “annoying things teachers do” category but it doesn’t affect their grade and in a perfect world will motivate them to be more responsible.

Please let me know via email or permission slip that your child is going to Rock Eagle. We’re cutting it close on money and an accurate count helps us to reserve space. If you’re planning on chaperoning, please let me know that too.

Synergy for checking grades is live. I finished the latest round of training on it Wednesday and will pass the information to my team here. Next week, the sign in and password will go home to those who signed the form at Open House. For those that did not, from the “annoying things that schools do” category, you have to come into the office, show ID and sign the form. The county requires us to ID everyone before issuing the log in information. May have to do with the growing underground black market demand for student grade information…

Once the information goes home, please check the grades fairly regularly. I mainly want everyone to watch for zeroes. Any time there’s a zero, something wasn’t turned in. I’ll accept the assignments and I’ve found pressure from parents is usually pretty effective. I drop lowest grades in many categories, so if you see a “d” next to the assignment grade, it means it’s being dropped in the average.

We’re working well on Social Studies projects (unit will end towards the end of the quarter) and started the Science unit. I’m excited about the partner work in Science. They’re researching destructive forces and the impact on man. Then they must design a structure for habitation that will withstand the force or a structure that prevents the negative impact from the force. They also have to prove the structure’s integrity either through experiment or research of materials (some are designing structures dealing with volcanoes and I can’t allow lava in the classroom).

Math individual assignments start Tuesday.

Have a great holiday weekend and ROLL TIDE! (Look for me on ESPN Saturday night, I’ll be the one in crimson.)
